Meet
Gary and Robin
Gary Edwards started fly
fishing in 1966 on the famous Beaverkill River in the
Catskill region of upstate New York. His love of the sport
motivated him to move to Wyoming, the home state of his
childhood idol, Curt Gowdy, host of The American Sportsman.
Years later Gary shared the stream with Curt on a number of
occasions, fishing some of their favorite Wyoming waters
together..
In 1986 he and his wife, Robin, moved to the Lake Ontario
region of NY, where they established the Wild River Inn.
This classic fishing lodge provided guide service catering
to fly fishers from around the world, who came to the area
in search of trophy brown trout, rainbows, steelhead, and
salmon. In 1988, Gary set an I.G.F.A. World Record on a fly
rod, when he landed a 22lb. 9oz. Chinook salmon on 2 lb.
test tippet. In that year he also became a member of the
Outdoor Writer's Association of America (O.W.A.A.). Gary's
fishing exploits and techniques have been featured in Fly
Fisherman, Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, Field & Stream,
over 9 national TV shows, and countless regional
publications..
In 1996 Gary and Robin formed the Wyoming Flyfishing
Connection, a membership-only club, based in the Laramie,
Wyoming area. The club offered its members access to over 15
miles of classic, private trout streams running through the
mountains and prairies of southeast Wyoming’s most
beautiful ranches. They sold the club in 2000 after
beginning work on their next fly fishing adventure with PBS
- TV..
In 1999, Gary and Robin began work with PBS as hosts of the
series, “Flyfishing Destinations.” In 2001, work on the
series grew into the formation of a new series,
"Vacations on the Fly," which the couple co-hosted
and produced. The program aired nationally through the PBS
network, averaging 22 million viewers. It helped other
couples and families plan great vacation getaways revolving
around some of the best fly fishing opportunities in the
world. It was only after beginning the work with PBS that
Robin ventured into the actual sport of fly fishing. Her
first lesson was with the queen of fly fishing, Joan Wulff.
In the course of hosting "Vacations on the Fly"
she continued to learn from some of the best instructors and
guides across the country and around the world..
Together, the Edwards’ enjoy sharing their enthusiasm and
love of the outdoors with both seasoned anglers and those
new to the sport of fly fishing. They offer hosted trips to
some of their favorite places throughout the Americas, most
of which qualify as “the road less traveled.”.
